EEG, Another Test, Another Appointment

My son is having his head examined.
Hooked up to wires
stuck on by sticky circles,
attached to a machine
that hums while it draws squiggly lines
like he sometimes does.

Will the doctors observe
how quickly he solves puzzles,
how he unscrambles jumbled words,
how rapid is reasoning is,
as he lies asleep upon their table?

I watch the brain wave patterns
like I once watched his fetal heart beat
as I rested my hand
on my convex belly.
This time I'll hold his hand in mine
and wish science could unscramble puzzles
as quickly as he does.
