What Do I Do with a Boy?

That’s what I thought
when I bit that cupcake blue
and frowned, fearing I had just sewed
the very first stitch
of separation between me and you.
A fool, really. In more ways than one.
First, to think it would matter
at all. And second, to think
we could ever be separate.
I knew your face before I saw it.
Scribbled your name in my notebook
before I knew what dreaming meant —
before I knew I could swallow stars
and not get close to the bright light
of a mother’s love.
What do I do with a boy?
I love him like that.
